Doors
You've decided to replace your
home's doors - What now?
In most American homes, doors
are used for both security and style. Unfortunately, the biggest energy wasters in
American homes are poorly constructed or poorly installed doors. Of course, few homeowners
take this into consideration when contemplating an exterior or interior door replacement
project.
Not all doors are created equally. Make sure that regardless of the manufacturer,
the materials used are of the best quality.
A poorly installed door will not prevent energy waste, provide adequate security
or last for the life of your home. Consider professional installation if you don't
have experience with hanging doors or skilled construction processes. Some other
considerations:
- If energy efficiency is your
main concern, replace a hollow door with a solid one.
- Installing weather-stripping
around the door to improve the seal at the threshold, which will also improve energy
conservation.
- Caulk the trim that surrounds
the door.
- To keep the design of your home's
entry ways consistent replace all the doors at the same time.
- Check the wood around doorframes
to gauge how complicated a do it yourself project might be.
Finally, quality should be at
the top of your mind when purchasing new doors or contracting a carpenter to build
your new doors.
